Veranda Update…

BEFORE
We have an update on the progress of our front Veranda. This is what it looked like when it was newish…very cute and cottagey, but over the years the poor carpentry skills of the Builder who made it showed. Railings falling out, wood rotting from the poor supports under and those kopper logs used as support post starting to get huge cracks and generally not looking too pretty.
DURING
This was the Veranda with the first coat of paint on and before the door was done and posts replaced…looking better….

AFTER
OK, so it’s not the best shot, but you can see what’s going on I hope.
We decided not to replace the railing as it opened up the front so much and we also opened up the view from inside. A new garden along the front (still in progress) of European Box, and twisted pines (soon) and some seaside daisies to soften it all up and I think it is a great improvement.

We are still doing some finishing jobs under the roof, and I still have to dress the front, once the floor is painted the charcoal on the door, but I can’t get over how grown up it makes our home look. Not like a doll’s house at all anymore.
You can see our new wicker roman blinds here, which we have everywhere else as well!

I hope the little pines grow fast, so I can whip them into shape like this one. We still have a lot to do in the garden…I have been enjoying pottering about out there now that the boy’s are a little older, so hopefully it will all take shape soon.

Here is the lovely charcoal colour on our front door I was talking about in a previous post. I think it looks lovely against the warm grey and white.

You can actually see a lot more of the detail from our old stain glass door now.

…and it looks wonderful with our Christmas wreath. I am still deciding on the urns as Mum bought me 2 wooden planters (you know the square ones with tounge and groove panels and little balls on the 4 corners?) that I was thinking of painting white for my little topiaries…hmm!

  • Ness, the change is amazing! I love the charcoal on the door (would you share the paint information?) — taking down the railing and changing the plantings and the window blinds changed the entire feel of the house. It’s really wonderful. I could sit for hours in that rocking chair!
    Very nice, indeed!

  • Wow! Fantastic job. Looks much better without the railings – larger even. Love the charcoal colour on the door, which will look great on the floor too. Could you tell us the colour please? I’ve been thinking of painting my horrible colourbond fences charcoal, so they recede a bit and let the plants stand out more. This might be just the colour I’m after!

  • The colour of the door, little cherubs, is ‘Woodland Grey’ by Dulux. They have a site at http://dulux.com.au

  • Beautiful Ness, beautiful! It reminds me of my fathers mothers house in Texas. The porch and all. Pour me a glass of lemonade, I think I’ll sit awhile! 🙂

  • Ness, You’ll be sorry if you paint that concrete floor. Makes for very slippery footing underneath..that is if it doesnt start to peel, which it always does. I painted a friends concrete porch floor in a checkerboard pattern and it bubbled, peeled and was very slick in rainy weather. We used very good paint and follwed all of the specific directions. Just thought you might like the info.

  • Don’t you wish you could wave a growing wand to make your plants grow faster? I do. I am very impatient when it comes to seeing them reach their prefered height..especially those sodding slow growing things!

  • Why did you remove the what seems like the wrap around porch?

  • This turned out beautifully! What a charming home you have. Love.

  • Anonymous,
There was never a wrap around veranda. It just goes straight across the front. All we done was change the poles to new ones and take the railings away. Everything else remains the same. That is what we will eventually do though, put the veranda around the entire house. Until then I dream 🙂
