Bathroom Mini Makeover – part 2

Here is stage two of our bathroom mini makeover. Our vanity has always been an after thought in this room (actually the whole room was an after thought!) and when we first moved in, the walls were a dirty cream colour with an Indian red trim. What was in this space was just a frame with plumbing pipes that had a curtain on it to try and dickie it up for the sale…it worked! The only thing I really cared about in this room was the original cast iron claw foot tub, and the size of the room.
So this cabinet had been ‘fixed’ up by my beloved Dad, who made these makeshift doors out of an old wardrobe that we had dismantled so we didn’t have to bother with the curtains and we could child proof it for the boys. Dad also added shelves to make it more functional for us as a family. The top of the unit was as it was. we also added the shelf and the mirror my dad made as the one that was there was about 20cm round!!! No good for putting on your face!
Basically all I have done is make it cleaner, lighter and brighter by painting the doors again with the enamel paint. I also painted the top of the unit (which is a plywood). This unit will be totally replaced with probably a table or the old sideboard we have and it will have an above counter sink..or 2!

The mirror also got a few coats of white paint, as did the long mirror and I added new wooden handles to the doors. After adding some greenery in a grey jug I bought at The Vintage Rose (for those observant ones, yes it is the same as the one Mic bought me for Christmas, except smaller) and some candles, it has taken on a totally different feel.
I also added the ampersand that I bought some time ago from White Flower Farmhouse to the mix.
This is what you see when you enter the room.
Better, I am thinking…and no money involved! You can see our laundry to the left…oh yeah, that’s what else I done today…

…I gave the laundry a mini makeover too!
This is what I started with, and it wasn’t that bad as I had added shelves and painted the sink surround white as it was originally Indian Red!
Once it dried (about an hour or so), I added some items to the shelves that I use all the time and I was done.
It looks much better now and eventually this space will be enclosed behind doors so it looks like a big linen closet.
I love these little shelves and the big blue container was part of an Engagement gift from my eldest Sister. I keep our washing powder in here. The little mirror and the planter that’s on the top shelf were second hand store finds by my Mum and I think they look good here for the time being.

So, what do you think of stage 2 of my ‘No Cost Bathroom Makeover’?
I am hoping it will be done for real very soon, but for the time being it is such a brighter room…and just with lashings of white paint.

  • Hi Ness,

Well I must say everything looks great. Can’t beat white, even though technically white is not a colour, you just can’t beat it for purity and freshness. Love the little jug from The Vintage Rose. I noticed on the shelf above the washing machine, just in front of the wreath, a small bottle. I had a chuckle when I say that ’cause I have exactly the same one that I bought from The Vintage Rose a little while ago now…Anyway, great job. I’ve also used the b.i.n product. Great product, I had the original 1960’s green paint in my pantry and ended up painting that Antique White USA. I must say it looks so much better now. Better go. Have a great day tomorrow.

Forgot to say I love the blue container that your sister bought for you. It looks really lovely. Starting to make too many typing mistakes……need to go to bed, I think.

  • Hi Ness!
I love your bathroom/ laundry room. It looks so cute! I especially love the shelves. It’s great the way you have displayed such pretty items. That’s the kind of stuff that makes a room go from average to amazing. I think shelves are a great place to create perfect little vignettes. The greens add such a nice pop too. You have a great sense of style. I just love the whole fresh white look…and that sink! It’s great!! Way to go girl! I’ll bet you’re actually enjoying doing laundry these days:)
Have a wonderful day! See you soon.

  • Oh Ness,
    It all looks brilliant.
    Very Scandanavian.
Considering this is supposed to be a ‘quick and temporary’ makeover it looks much more than that.
You’ve done a great job. XXXX

  • It looks divine you are very very clever. One teeny suggestion – not sure how high the ceiling is but you could maybe get away with one or two more shelves above the washing machine, given the top ones have mainly decorative things? Might give you even more height illusion. Just a thought xoxo

  • It looks great — all cleaned up with just the right accents. Love the pitcher and blue jar! It almosts makes me want to go paint my basement laundry room, almost!! It is dark and dreary, but I know if I painted it all orange it would look so much better. But, oh, that would be quite a job…

  • Wow – you’ve done a brilliant job! Just proves style doesn’t cost a thing. I thought of you on Sunday as I was painting an old wardrobe with Zinsser – where would we be without this amazing product! Leigh

Thank you, you are so sweet! I have never been into the big hand pump soap dispensers and nothing is nicer than real soap and a little ceramic dish.

  • Hi Janine,
I love the Vintage Rose for little touches. Amanda has a great eye and just visiting fills me with inspiration to do something. It is trying to leave without buying something that I sometimes find hard.
Glad you like the mini makeover.

  • I agree Gail. It is those touches that can make even an ugly room look great. I enjoyed waking up this morning to a sun drenched room. It bounced off the white everywhere and I am actually looking forward to doing the laundry today!!!

  • hi Jane,
suggestions are fine. Our ceilings are 11 foot high and I would like some more shelves in there, but will wait until we do the real renovation to do that. Great idea though. Thanks,

  • The laundry looks so pretty. I don’t think it needs to be enclosed. I love adding a bit of color and texture with baskets. The one in your laundry is perfect!
I also like what you’ve done in to the bathroom. It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint will do.
