Our Living Area And A Bathroom Floor Update

A photo of our living room through our French doors. I have added some pieces in here over the last week and I will show you more images soon. You would notice I don’t have a rug down…there is a reason, actually 2 little ones! Through the Summer months I decided it was so much easier to take up our jute rug while the boys are running in and out of these doors covered in grass and the like. It makes it a breeze just to sweep up at the end of each day because the boys run in and out of these doors and carry in bits of everything!
I don’t think I have ever showed this view of our living space before. You can see how it works with the kitchen and dining space (I must sort that ‘BLOOM’ sign out, always moves). I did add the big wicker trunk to the side of the sofa which I am loving…anyway, bathroom floor update….
Mic was away for work all weekend, and while he was gone I pulled up the lino to discover lovely Tasmanian Hardwood floorboards like the rest of our house, and they are in fairly good condition. There was a patch though that had really old newsprint on it. I tried to take a detailed shot for you…you may be able to make out the print! Well I sat for hours with a chisel, scrapping this stuff off!!

This is what it all looks like this morning.
I wont be able to do anything in here much this week as I have lots on with other jobs, but I will be hoping to get some gaping etc done on the weekend ready for a coat of BIN primer as there are some old stains here and there that will bleed through my top coat if I don’t seal them properly. I am happy to leave them raw for now.
Hope you have a lovely day.
Ness xx

  • I’m ashamed to admit it Ness, but your BLOOM sign was the first thing I noticed, OCD is a curse!
LOVE your large wicker basket, and your timber floors.

  • I would LOVE to have floors like that in my home. You are so lucky to have them in such great condition. Megan recently pulled up the layers covering her 100 year old floor in her bedroom. She wasn’t so lucky. I guess that is the chance you take, you might get a sad surprise. She made the best of it and painted them. Anyway, your home is just perfect. Loving your style! Take care, Lori I

  • Hi Ness,
I must confess to having major ceiling envy! Yours is lovely. Speaking of lovely…..I received my package and wanted to give you a big hug and a thank you! The cushion is visiting all over the house (we cant stand to be apart!) and the tag is hanging off a glass apothecary jar. I will post a pic and a shout out when my camera returns home!

  • Oh Ness, you deserve an award for hard work and vision!! Was your back sore?! You are a real domestic goddess. WIsh you lived closer haha and I would put you to work. 🙂

It’s going to look AMAZING and I am so envious of your raw floors. My Mom has an old house and old wood floors hidden under layers of carpet. I am on her lately to remove the carpet but she is not a DIY type. I may have to get out the tools…with your inspiration, next time I am home!

Great work. Cant wait to see the followup. xo Terri

  • We live in a 100 year old farmhouse and our kitchen floor had patches of old newspapers, also. Was this a trend long ago?

I know newspaper was often adhered to old wood walls with a paste of flour and water. The newspaper would reflect light in the dark interiors of houses with few windows. We found 1930’s newspapers on some of our walls after removing 1960’s cheap paneling, a layer of cardboard (for insulation) and 1940’s wallpaper. It took weeks to reveal the original horizontal wood plank walls!

  • What a great bonus finding those bathroom floors. Will you seal them like the rest of your floors in your home?

When I lifted the lino off my 50’s fibro bathroom I found wooden floor with a part that had been covered with a sheet of copper. I was doing the happy dance.

  • Hi Ness,
Your floor is beautiful. I love your house. I would love to live in an old house. I just love how you painted your living room. I know I have said it before, but I am going to say it again. Can’t wait to see the finished product.
Thanks for the nice email. You made me feel like I could possibly sew. I will let you know if or when I start that again. For now I am going to admire your work.

  • Sandy,
He likes them. We have that same flooring through the whole house so we knew what was under there…it was the condition we were scared of, but they are in great shape for their age!
