A Storage Wish

Storage has always been an issue for us and on top of my list for our new home will be storage. We never had a problem in our kitchen with storage, just the bedrooms…I just couldn’t help but show you this kitchen. I love the drawers everywhere – and the bead board walls!!

I love this storage solution in this Laundry room designed by the fabulous Tricia Foley. It amazing and oh so chic too!

…and although I am not overly into open
shelving in the kitchen (we ripped ours out when we re lined the kitchen as it always looked wrong and I was sick of dusting them!), but I am liking this shelving system in Sarah’s farmhouse.
So while I continue moving furniture about our house this weekend and getting the rooms ready to out the house on the market, I will be thinking about the ‘list’ for the next home we buy. Hopefully I can show you what I have been up to.

  • Dear Ness, in my next house I want to have: a large kitchen, a laundry room and a storage room. In the kitchen must be: a long table, lots of storage space, an AGA and many windows. A dream??? Perhaps… 😉

  • I agree-I don’t like open shelving either but this is great example of how it can work.

  • I just love the first kitchen – I want it all and am in love with the drawer pulls. I do like open shelving in kitchens if things are displayed nicely as I feel they open a kitchen up and make it feel lived in but homey but it’s probably cos we don’t see this a lot in the UK – kitchens tend to be completely fitted with wall units which I really don’t like. I’m a huge fan of Trish Foley and only recently heard of Sarah Richardson – all gorgeous pics – have a lovely weekend.

  • I actually love open shelves, but I would have to have lots of drawers too to stash all the unsightly kitchen bits. Have a great weekend Ness.

  • Storage always seems an issue. I don’t think it matters how much we have we always need more

  • Hi Ness,

Love seeing all the images today! It seems a bit of a toss up….you know open shelves = space and lightness against all the sticky dust that tends to stick to them. Top cupboards = storage. With our original kitchen it had overhead cupboards right around the room, so much storage it would make your head spin!! With our new kitchen I don’t have any overhead cupboards, apart from over the wall oven and over the fridge, I don’t miss them….I culled brutely, I took out 15 boxes of stuff. When it was time to put it all back in 5 boxes of things went in….brutal I know, but if I didn’t want things falling on me when I opened a cupboard door, it was something I knew I had to do….nothing went back in that I didn’t love or use!!! I hope that if you are re-arranging rooms this weekend, that you get lots done for a start and it gives you a happy feeling when you are done. Stay warm, weather today isn’t much is it???
    Take care

  • I have some open shelves in my kitchen, and although anything glass that I put on them gets pretty sticky, and I have to wash it often, I do love the way it looks. I like having that open display space. I also have a glass-front built-in hutch that I just put fabric into (behind the doors) because I couldn’t stand the cluttered look any more!

I love those shelves in the pic you posted above. I’m also loving that sink, which looks like zinc…do you think it is?

  • Isn’t that what they say about old houses – the worst thing is that there’s generally no or very little storage. That’s certainly the case with our place as well. Oh well, you take the good with the bad and it all works out in the middle!

  • So nice to see that you are all mixed about the idea of shelves in the kitchen. I love that shot with shelves, but for our own kitchen it closed in the space so they had to go and it looked so much better straight away.

…and I would LOVE Tricia to stop by for a re decorate!! ;0p
