You know those places where you are always inspired, your inspiration filled when you leave? Well, that is this place – The Black Hen in Deloraine. One of my favourite Tasmanian stores to visit. Upstairs for the beautiful shop is this space – in the top of the old Colonial building. The first thing that caught my eye was the roof…that’s the Architect nerd coming out in me!
I had to zip around and take some photos before I got started…as I was actually here to teach a Chalkboard Writing workshop…not take photos! This window nearly came home with me 😉
Everywhere you turn, there was something else too ohh and ah over. Little, thoughtful vignettes everywhere…we were all settled that we were going to move in, Friends style.
The kitchen that is behind the workshop area is the cutest! Julie and her Husband Noel carted these big old counters, chairs, tables etc up the steepest, narrow stairs ever…I’m still blown away they did this on their own!!
Apparently this table was the heaviest…it’s beautiful.
Everything has been thought of. A place to hang your coats and put your belongings while the class is going, little coffee area with all sorts of brews. Every milk and alternative we needed (I don’t use dairy) was greatly received and the food spread was wonderful…local Tasmanian cheeses, pastes, fruit sat on gorgeous old wooden serving boards and old suitcases and Julie had catered for the few in the group that are gluten free/Paleo (you are a doll, Julie).
Little areas to sit and chat in the coffee break were wonderful and comfortable
It is photo heaven!
This big tray was used way back in the day to drag up the grain etc. It’s like a trap door that leads straight into the store downstairs…not used anymore though. I could image that filled with Hydrangeas and Old Mans Whiskers, or tonnes of glass jars in different sizes, filled with tiny fairy lights and pine branches at Christmas time. 🙂
We had to pry our fingers from our cameras and phones, so we could get on with the workshop. This is the workshop space…it was perfect!
All of the little signs I could have taken home with me…perfect!
Julie has added a load of old vinyls. Dean Martin was my choice.
We had such a lovely day, learning my tips and tricks to chalkboard writing. The group was wonderful. We had an Accountant, a Florist, a Chocolatier, an Author/Writer, shop owners and an Architect (who was equally as taken with the gorgeous ceiling). It was so nice seeing how they took the tips and used them to relate to their own loves.
Sharing things like this fill my heart.
Once we finished, we headed down stairs to the gorgeous store and had a bit of a shop and chat. Such a wonderful day and after a solemn week in our family after loosing our beloved Pop and laying him to rest yesterday, it was a nice head space change for me.
I wanted to say a huge thank you to Julie from The Black Hen for allowing me to ramble on about chalkboard art and calligraphy and christen her new/old workshop space. I hope to be back for another soon.
Also to the wonderful group of ladies that attended. You are all stars!!
